Sensitive brass writing from Alice Brookes

A friend has just recommended Alice Brooke’s piece for brass quartet - “Maudlin” Foolish Sentiment. She has posted an excellent recording of it on SoundCloud played by Northern Quarters Brass Quartet. Superbly subtle brass writing through an excellent composition, congratulations to Alice, a former pupil of Julie Woollard. Well worth listening to.

The title Maudlin is defined as ‘deep sentiment’ however an alternative definition if ‘foolishly sentimental’, a much more fitting title for a piece so unashamedly melancholic and intimate. It is a reminder of the dependence that humans place upon humans. A commission for the Northern Quarters brass quartet. Written for - Cornet Cornet Tenor Horn Baritone Horn
